It’s a nightmare! You can never get a full view of your customers, and it’s nearly impossible to keep track of everything. This was the reality back in 1999 for most businesses. Customer information was scattered all over the place, and everyone was working with different systems. Salespeople missed out on leads because they couldn’t keep up with the chaos. Customer service teams were overwhelmed, and there was no easy way to track how things were going.

The need for a solution was clear: businesses needed a way to store and manage customer data more easily, and they needed tools that could automate time-consuming tasks so they could focus on what really mattered — building strong relationships with their customers.

This is where the spark for Salesforce was born. The idea was simple: create a tool that would bring everything into one place and help businesses work smarter, not harder.

In 1999, Marc was working at Oracle, a massive tech company, but he wasn’t satisfied with the way traditional software was built. It was expensive, complicated, and hard to manage. And for most businesses, especially smaller ones, it was just too out of reach. Marc had a bold idea: what if businesses didn’t have to install software on their computers or buy expensive servers? What if they could access a tool online that was easy to use, affordable, and powerful enough to manage all their customer data? This would be the first step in making CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software available to everyone.

Marc teamed up with his friends Parker Harris, Dave Moellenhoff, and Frank Dominguez, who were all experienced engineers and developers who shared Marc’s vision of making business software simpler and more accessible. It was a risky idea, but they were determined.

The idea was groundbreaking, but it wasn’t enough just to build it—they had to convince companies to try something new. And that’s where the real challenge began.

When Salesforce was first launched, many people didn’t understand why they should trust the cloud with their important customer data. Storing everything online sounded too risky. Marc and his team had to do a lot of convincing. To make things even more difficult, they were going up against big players in the tech world, like Microsoft and Oracle, who already had their own CRM software. Salesforce had limited resources, so they couldn’t rely on huge advertising budgets. Instead, they focused on building strong relationships with their first customers, getting them to share their positive experiences and help spread the word.

Despite all the challenges, the team pushed forward. They listened to customer feedback, improved their product, and gradually built a loyal customer base. Slowly but surely, Salesforce started to gain traction. More and more businesses saw the value in having a cloud-based CRM that was affordable and easy to use.
